BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TDOAY: Thursday, March 10, 1825 (very approximately)

Beethoven’s canons WoO 180 and 187 are published some time around today by Schott in their Cäcilia magazine in Mainz. These are respectively “Hoffmann, sei ja kein Hofmann,” and “Schwenke dich ohne Schwänke!” The Hoffmann canon dates from March of 1820, and the Schwenke canon from November of 1824. Beethoven had sent these canons along with a Romantic Biography of Tobias Haslinger in Three Parts, which Schott also printed, whether or not that was intended by Beethoven, without getting Haslinger’s approval.
