BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Friday, June 30, 1826 (approximately)

Beethoven makes a note to himself to write the “fish superintendent,” probably meaning Wilhelm Klingenbrunner, playwright at the Leopoldstadt Theater, who procured fish for Beethoven. Since he lived in Leopoldstadt, he would forward Beethoven’s orders to fishmonger Therese Jonas.

Beethoven also works on a draft letter to a friend, probably to Franz Gerhard Wegeler’s letter of December 29, 1825 with news of many people from Bonn. Wegeler had suggested that he could come to the defense of Beethoven’s mother, in connection with the scurrilous suggestions that Beethoven was the illegitimate son of Frederick the Great. “Awkwardness annoyed.”
