BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, August 1, 1825 (approximately)
At some point around now, former unpaid assistant Anton Schindler pays Beethoven a call in Baden. According to Beethoven, Schindler asks to be reinstated, and kisses his hand. Beethoven does not accept Schindler’s service, though he uses it as a threat in a few days to get his brother Johann to help him out.
Schindler’s visit is mentioned in Beethoven’s letter to Brother Johann on August 4, Brandenburg Letter 2024; Anderson Letter 1408.
