BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, August 2, 1824

Today’s Wiener Zeitung (Nr.175) at 736 includes an advertisement from the Lithographic Institute for a newly-published song by Franz Schubert for voice and piano, the Lied an den Tod (Tod, du Schrecken der Natur) for 20 kr. W.W. This song is today catalogued as D.518. The text is by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart, and Schubert’s setting was probably written in 1816 or 1817. It can be heard here, sung by Elly Ameling, with Rudolf Jansen at piano:

This evening, young virtuoso Franz Liszt performs at the first of two concerts in Manchester, England. At tonight’s event Liszt plays the Hummel Piano Concerto Nr.3 in B minor and The Fall of Paris with grand orchestral accompaniment by Ignaz Moscheles.
