BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, December 3, 1821

Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz is clearly still a big hit. Both S.A. Steiner and Cappi and Diabelli advertise in today’s Wiener Zeitung numerous arrangements of selections from the opera, variously arranged for piano and piano four hands.

Also of note in today’s musical advertisements is a new String Quartet, op.10, by Léon de Saint-Lubin (1805-1850), a teen violinist and composer who had moved to Vienna in 1820. In October 1822, Beethoven will write a small cadenza or violin solo for Saint-Lubin, Hess 296, but unfortunately although Beethoven scholars verified its authenticity, no one had the foresight to publish it, photograph it, or even copy it. The cadenza disappeared from the Austrian National Library (Signatur Sm 3154) in 1948 and it has not been seen since.
