BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, July 5, 1824
Today’s Wiener Zeitung includes an advertisement from Sauer & Leidesdorf for volumes 12 and 13 of their subscription edition of the Complete Operas of Rossini, arranged for piano by Maximilian J. Leidesdorf. These operas are the the one-act Il Bruschino and La Scala di Seta. While these are for sale at 5 and 6 florins W.W. respectively, subscribers can get both volumes for only 6 florins. The publishers say, “We always have in mind as our ultimate goal to make ourselves worthy of the popularity and honorable recognition that we have received so far through our cheap prices and the most prompt service. We are happy to forego a momentary profit, if we find the opportunity to demonstrate a reflection of our true feelings.” The ability to subscribe has been extended for an unspecified period of time yet again, since the list of subscribers’ names has not yet been created. There follows a list of the eleven volumes in the set previously published. Nr.151 at 634. This advertisement is repeated next Monday in the Wiener Zeitung at 660 as well.
There will be no update tomorrow, and we will resume on July 7.
