BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, October 6, 1823

According to Karl’s description of his conversations with Beethoven’s new landlord, part of the apartment that he is going to be renting for the fall on the Landstrasse will be vacated today. Beethoven probably begins moving his furniture in about now or soon thereafter.

Sauer & Leidesdorf announce in today’s Wiener Zeitung that by popular demand the subscription to their luxury edition of the Complete Operas of Rossini has been extended by another month, until the end of December. One can register at the publisher as well as at all book, art and music shops for the price of 6 fl. W.W.; after the end of December, the prices in stores will increase by more than half to 10 fl. W.W. The first four operas have already been issued, and the fifth will be announced in a few days. The publisher assures subscribers “of the uninterrupted and punctual appearance of the continuation from month to month and the exact fulfillment of their promise.” No mention of the threats from Artaria & Co. is made, though Sauer & Leidesdorf are clearly trying to assure potential customers that they will arrange for a complete set, though how they intend to do that without litigation is unclear.
