BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, October 7, 1822

Music publisher and dealer S.A. Steiner & Co. repeats its preliminary advertisement for the March and Chorus op.114 (Schmückt die Altare) most recently heard in The Consecration of the House (but borrowed from Beethoven’s earlier work, The Ruins of Athens, op.113) in today’s Wiener Zeitung at page 923. Although Beethoven seems to have hoped for the score to be ready for sale while Consecration of the House was still playing at the Theater in the Josephstadt, it appears that not even this piece was ready.
