BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Monday, September 23, 1822

In today’s Wiener Zeitung at p. 876, Cappi & Diabelli repeats its advertisement for the corrected edition of Beethoven’s newest piano sonata, #31 in A-flat, op.110. Did Beethoven assist them in producing their corrected edition, thereby undercutting Moritz Schlesinger, to whom he had sold the sonata? Perhaps not directly, but he almost certainly gave errata sheets to the Vienna music dealers, and the consequence was entirely foreseeable…as Beethoven had warned.
