BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Saturday, April 20, 1822
Things improve with the second performance of Rossini’s opera Zelmira, and Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung editor Friedrich August Kanne goes on to rave in his review about Rossini’s wealth of ideas, and the beauty of the singers’ voices. The tenor Sgr. David is particularly singled out for the way he moves from his beautiful middle register up to a high D. Kanne regrets that only a short Introduction was provided for the opera by Rossini rather than a full Overture. He is so enthused that the glowing review of the opera fills nearly five issues of the AMZ, from April 20 through May 4th.
