BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Saturday, June 12, 1824
Beethoven and his housekeeper Barbara Holzmann are probably settling in to his summer apartment. Beethoven is renting the first floor (second floor American) of the building then numbered Penzing 43. An engraving of the Penzing building circa 1910 is attached, courtesy the Bonn Beethovenhaus, NE 81, Band VI, Nr.1029. The house no longer exists, but the present address is Hadikgasse 62. (Our thanks to regular contributor Birthe Kibsgaard for the information about the Penzing building.)
The Berliner Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung of June 2, 1824 (Nr.22) at 198 contains a preview of the concerts in Berlin for the month of June. Among these is a performance of Handel’s Alexander’s Feast at the Opera House, along with Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony in A major.
