BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Sunday, January 29, 1826
The Schuppanzigh Quartet gives the next in their series of subscription concerts today in the Hall of the Musikverein. The program is that which would have been given last week, but for Schuppanzigh’s illness. The works performed today are Haydn’s Prussian Quartet in F, Nr.40, op.50/5, Hob.III/48 “Dream”; Beethoven’s most recent quartet in E-flat, op.127 (which had been premiered by the Schuppanzigh Quartet in March of the previous year); and Mozart’s Quintet Nr.5 in D major, K.593. Leipzig Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung (Nr.8) February 22, 1826 at 127. This is the first performance of the Beethoven quartet since the end of April, 1825. It will not be played again until November 26, again by the Schuppanzigh Quartet.
