BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Sunday, June 19, 1825
Nephew Karl is in Baden with Uncle Ludwig. Karl computes up the charges for various recent expenses: the cloth for the tailor, the subscription and binding costs for the Complete Works of Schiller, books for use with Karl’s tutor, a book of fine paper, and a bundle of quill pens. There was also a charge of 6 florins 15 kreutzers for Shakespeare. [Several editions have been advertised in recent issues of the Wiener Zeitung.] The Schiller Works have gotten expensive; they subscribed to the copperplate edition, and the price went up another florin, which Karl paid, from 4 florins to 5, since the publisher said they couldn’t finish the project otherwise.
The prospective housekeeper can come on Wednesday or Thursday.
Karl then returns to Vienna this afternoon.
