BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Sunday, May 11, 1823

Ludwig and Nephew Karl visit the apartment in Hetzendorf late in the afternoon. Ludwig wonders whether it will have enough light. Karl points out that since the sun has already started to set, they can tell what the afternoon light will be; then they can just look at the opposite point to see what the morning light will be like, since that will the be east, or southeast.

Satisfied, Beethoven today signs the lease for his apartment in Hetzendorf with Baron Prónay. That contract is held by the Berlin Staatsbibliothek, mus. ms. autogr. Beethoven. 38,10. A copy of the lease is attached.
