BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Sunday, October 16, 1825 (very approximately)

Beethoven writes to Nephew Karl after moving into the Schwarzspanierhaus apartment. “I would be very pleased if I knew when you want or can come to me? You know that we have to go somewhere, and then we can go and eat together at your discretion. Your faithful uncle.”

“Not later than half past twelve, or at most, one o’clock.”

Brandenburg Letter 2073; Anderson Letter 1474. The watermark of the paper indicates the year 1825. From the context, it was a time that Beethoven was living in Vienna but Karl was living separately, i.e. sometime after October 15, 1825.

Beethoven needs unpaid assistant Karl Holz for something, so he goes looking for Holz but is unable to find him and returns to his apartment.
