BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Sunday, October 19, 1823

Carl Maria von Weber completes the overture to his new opera, Euryanthe today, just in the nick of time, since the opera is set to premiere on Saturday the 25th.

Max Maria von Weber, Carl Maria von Weber. Ein Lebensbild, (Leipzig 1864-66) II at 739.

According to the October 21 Wiener Zeitung Arrivals column, pianist and composer Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870) arrives in Vienna from London. Moscheles will be appearing in a series of concerts and will visit Beethoven more than once. Years earlier, Moscheles had impressed Beethoven with his skills so much that he authorized the young man to prepare the piano reduction of his opera Fidelio for the Artaria publishing house. Moscheles remained a champion of Beethoven and his music throughout his life. He would eventually translate Schindler’s biography of Beethoven into English.
