BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Thursday, August 12, 1824

B. Schott’s Sons writes to Fries & Co. from Mainz today, sending a revised bill of exchange for Beethoven, in the amount for 500 florins C.M. Brandenburg Letter 1861. The original letter is lost, but its contents are known from a letter from Fries & Co. to Schott of November 27, 1824 (Brandenburg 1902). This 500 florin payment is in partial satisfaction of the agreement to pay 1600 florins in three installments for the rights to publish the Missa Solemnis and Ninth Symphony. As of yet, however, Schott has not received any scores from Beethoven.
