BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Thursday, July 6, 1826 (approximately)

Unpaid assistant Karl Holz briefly stops by Beethoven’s apartment sometime around now. Holz tells him the interest payable for the first half of the year on Beethoven’s seven shares in the Austrian National Bank: 224 florins, or 32 florins per share. Beethoven asks Holz to stay for dinner. Holz replies, “Thank you very much, but I have been invited out. I have to go.”

Before he departs, Holz suggests that Beethoven give him the dedication copy of the Ninth Symphony so that it can be proofread. This is the copy that Wenzel Rampl recently copied, though some pages that had been copied by Ferdinand Wolanek are included. Holz also asks Beethoven for a set of parts, presumably to compare against the copy.

Beethoven makes a note of an advertisement from the June 30, 1826 Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung of Pausanias, Description of Hellas, translated from Greek by Ernst Wiedasch, with a map of Athens, which had been published by Fleischmann in Munich.
