BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Thursday, June 2, 1825
Beethoven is in a coffeehouse in Baden, reading yesterday’s newspapers. He notes down the statutory price for beef as 15 kr. W.W. or 6 kr. C.M. per pound. He also makes a note of an advertisement by Johann Baptist Wallishausser, bookseller, for a dictionary edited by Johann Philipp Schlellenberg, in 2 volumes.
He writes a reminder to write to Brother Johann about an advertisement in the Intelligenzblatt supplement to yesterday’s Wiener Zeitung about someone looking to buy an apothecary.
Beethoven copies down an advertisement for the Schwarzspanierhaus: “Apartments, Nobility- and Other — View over the Glacis; inquire at the house superintendent’s.” This ad repeated frequently throughout June. This will be the building where Beethoven will move in the fall.
Finally, Beethoven makes a note of wine for sale at Spänglergasse 565, sealed bottles with deposit, or at various prices per measure.
