Carl Maria von Weber’s opera Der Freischütz is premiered on this date in Berlin. It is an immediate success, and productions are mounted in Vienna later this year. This work is often credited as the beginning of Romantic Opera. Whether related to Weber’s composition or not, Beethoven gave little serious consideration to composing an opera after this.
