BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Thursday, May 18, 1826

Beethoven makes a note to himself in the conversation book, apparently despairing about the situation with Karl: “Resign from the g__________p, [guardianship] it won’t work.”

Conversation Book 110, 30r.

Beethoven’s current housekeeper (who seems to have been there only a few days, since the prior housekeeper’s service was up on May 14) gives her two weeks’ notice today, so she will be departing on Thursday June 1.

Artaria & Co. advertises in today’s Wiener Zeitung (Nr.112 at 480) the newest work from Beethoven’s former pupil Carl Czerny, his Grande Polonaise brillante for Pianoforte, op.118. The same is also available from Artaria in an arrangement for string quartet.
