BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Thursday, September 19, 1822
Although we have seen several advertisements for Beethoven’s Piano Sonata #31 in A-flat, op.110 already, today Cappi & Diabelli advertises in the Wiener Zeitung a Corrected Edition of the Sonata, without further comment. You may recall that on August 31 Beethoven had written to publisher Moritz Schlesinger complaining that the sonata was still full of errors that he had already asked be corrected, saying “I am very uncomfortable when my works appear so full of errors.” In February, 1823, Beethoven will also write to Ferdinand Ries in London, noting that the Schlesinger printing contained mistakes that would need to be corrected in Ries’ edition, which will be published by Muzio Clementi.
