BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Tuesday, January 10, 1826

Franz Schubert attends a party at the Vienna home of Franz von Schober today. Eduard von Bauernfeld had invited the poet Johann Gabriel Seidl in an effort to rejoin Schubert with Seidl. Within a few weeks, Schubert will compose the first of eleven songs setting Seidl’s words. The evening is described by one attendee as a “feast of song.” A duet by Schubert is performed, as are a quartet by Hüttenbrenner, a duet by Carafa, an Aria by Rossini and other songs, lasting until 9:30 at night.
