BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Tuesday, May 24, 1825

Nephew Karl presumably travels to Baden with housekeeper Barbara Holzmann, as his uncle had instructed. Unfortunately, their confrontation over Karl meeting with his mother Johanna is not part of these conversation books, so we don’t have any details. However, Karl’s writing in the conversation book tomorrow is quite businesslike, so they seem to come to an uneasy truce over the matter. It will not, however, be the last time Johanna is the subject of discussion this summer as Uncle Ludwig gets more concerned about what his nephew is doing in Vienna without being closely supervised.
