BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Wednesday, April 4, 1821

Today’s Wiener Zeitung at p.311 carries the announcement of Josephine (Brunsvik) von Stackelberg’s death. The notice contains very little detail beyond the name of her husband Christoph, her birth name, and the fact she was 40 [she had actually just turned 42] and lived at Adlergasse Nr. 658.

While the death notice for Beethoven’s great love is only a brief line item, it is at the top of a column and is the first death listed for March 31. It thus may have caught Beethoven’s eye, if he had not already heard of her death by word of mouth.
