BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Wednesday, August 23, 1826

Unpaid assistant Karl Holz stops by Beethoven’s apartment today, after checking in on Nephew Karl’s status in the hospital. “The doctor cannot say anything definite about when he will be fully recovered; it is going to take a while yet. However, you can be assured about his safety.”

Beethoven objects to something that the hospital is allowing, possibly visits from Karl’s mother Johanna or his friend Joseph Niemetz. Holz responds that he cannot forbid him that. Beethoven wants him watched at all times. Holz doesn’t think that’s realistic. “Then they would have to have a constant supervisor at the hospital.” How then are they to keep him from bad influences like Joseph Niemetz? “It is difficult,” Holz agrees. “And Karl is too attached to him.” Beethoven resolves to punish Karl by staying away. Holz sees through this. “You won’t punish him by not going there to see him. You would only punish him by not giving him any more money; that is his only reason for still writing to you.”

Beethoven has a number of errands that needs to be run today. Holz assures him that he will go to see all the gentlemen on the list today, and takes his leave.
