BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Wednesday, July 17, 1822
The Vienna Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung issued today sets out at col. 456 the schedule for the last five performances of the Rossini Festival at the Kärntnertor Theater:
Thursday July 18th: Ricciardo e Zoraide, with a ballet. Final performance.
Friday July 19th: La gazza ladra.
Saturday July 20th: Zelmira. Final performance.
Monday July 22nd: La gazza ladra. Final performance.
Tuesday July 23rd: Corradino [Mathilde, in German]. Final performance.
Contractual obligations elsewhere were supposed to be taking Herr David, one of the most acclaimed performers in the Festival, away on the 20th, but the AMZ offers great thanks for his agreement to stay on for the last two performances. [The AMZ of July 10th mentioned that the Festival would end on Saturday the 20th, so these last two performances on the 22nd and 23rd seem to have been hastily added by popular demand, which would explain how the conflict arose for M. David.]
Artaria & Co., well aware of the rapidly approaching end of the Rossini Festival, prominently advertises today in the Wiener Zeitung their vocal and piano scores of popular selections from three of the operas prominently featured in the festival: Zelmira, Corradino, and Elisabetta. In addition, Artaria offers piano solo versions of popular pieces from La gazza ladra, and Otello.
