BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Wednesday, June 11, 1823 (very approximately)
Sometime between June 2 and June 14, publisher, composer and pedagogue Johann Anton André (1775-1842), and Kapellmeister of the Hessian Court, pays a call on Beethoven in Hetzendorf. André was in Vienna from May 16 to June 23, 1823. The meeting did not go well. Beethoven later writes, “His behavior was so rude that I had to write to him not to visit me any more. Only later did I find out that he was in [the Grand Duke of Hesse’s] service. Had I known that at the time, I would have endured his behavior out of consideration for H.R.H.” Excerpt from Brandenburg Letter 1723, Anderson Letter 1225, of August 2, 1823.
