BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Wednesday, June 4, 1823
Beethoven writes to Johann Schickh (1770-1835), founder and editor of the Wiener Zeitschrift [Vienna Magazine for Art, Literature, Theater, and Fashion]. Beethoven asks whether he can still get all of the issues of this years volume of the magazine, to which he would like to subscribe.
Brandenburg Letter 1671, Anderson Letter 1070 [Anderson was unable to identify the recipient]. The original is held at Rutgers University, Alexander Library (Special Collections and University Archives, RUL MC981).
This same date, Maurice Schlesinger writes to Beethoven. This letter is lost, but its existence and date are known from a registration marking on Brandenburg Letter 1572, dated February 18, 1823. In that letter, Beethoven had requested a copy of the 25 Scottish Songs, op.108, which had been published by Maurice’s father Adolph. This letter may have been forwarding those volumes to Beethoven.
