BEETHOVEN 200 YEARS AGO TODAY: Wednesday, September 25, 1822
Cappi & Diabelli repeat their advertisement for a corrected edition of Beethoven’s newest piano sonata, #31 in A-flat op.110, in today’s Wiener Zeitung.
Today’s Leipzig Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung Nr.39 at col. 637-638 includes a report of concerts of a choral society in Mitau, near Riga in Latvia, which meets in a private home on Sundays from September to May after services to perform church music. This ambitious group performed Beethoven’s Mass in C, op.86, as well as six masses by Haydn and numerous other pieces.
In Riga itself, the regular subscription concerts, which had existed for many years, stopped. They were replaced over the winter by popular musical entertainment evenings by dilettantes. Under the old custom, they opened every concert with a complete symphony, where one could hear masterpieces of the genre by Beethoven and others from time to time.
