2 part simple fugue in D min., Hess 236 nr.5

Based on theme Nr.10 from Albrechtsberger's list. No.5 from Nottebohm's Chapter IV, p.80. Corrected by Albrechtsberger. Here scored for french horn and trombone. Dates from about 1794-95.

Thirty years after his studies with Albrechtsberger, Beethoven said the following about da Palestrina : 'Pure church music ought to be performed by voices only, except a "Gloria," or some similar text. For this reason I prefer Palestrina; but it is folly to imitate him without having his genius and religious views; it would be difficult, if not impossible, too, for the singers of today to sing long notes in a sustained and pure manner.' (Krehbiel, p.54)
