Second Trio to the Scherzo for String Trio op. 9 nr.1, Hess 28 (mp3)

Second Trio to the Scherzo for String Trio op. 9 nr. 1 (1797-98). The old view says that this second trio was rejected from the autograph score (Johnson 1980a, pp.327-8). However, Beethoven´s remark : 'Das 2te Trio muss zum Einlegen geschrieben werden' sounds more like the opposite, namely that it was composed as an afterthought, and that it should be included in the finished work. The opus 9 Trios may already have been at the press, and our Hess 28 may have arrived too late for inclusion. And so it fell into oblivion.

In our opinion it is a good deal more fun than the 'official', first trio, which is in the printed score. Therefore there is every reason to include it in any future performance of op.9 nr.1; either as 2nd trio, so that the Scherzo becomes an A-B-A-C-A form, or as replacement of the 'official' trio.
