This was one of the numerous sets of dances that Beethoven wrote for the winter dance season in Vienna. Beethoven usually wrote these in versions for piano, orchestra and string trio, but only the piano version of this set of dances has survived. The famous Minuet in G that is usually the first Beethoven composition that beginning pianists confront is the second minuet in the set.
